Why do I do this to myself?

I’m exhausted. Really, really tired. Some of that’s physical and all of it’s mental.

I always take on more than I can handle.  My wife’s been out of town for 10 days (11 if she doesn’t catch her conecting flight because of delays in Newark) so I decided it would be a good time to do some of those side projects I’ve been wanting to do:

I *launched* the HyperBored blog. Yes it had been live but I got some basic plugins installed and got a real theme installed. Thanks to my hosting installing it wasn’t even that tough, but I did decide to write up a brand new post, which turned out to be longer than I had anticipated (they always are).

I launched this blog from scratch. Once again installing it wasn’t that tough thanks to my hosting. But with all new projects there’s always the basic stuff to take care of. Writing a first post, a first page getting the side bar installed the way you want it getting your blogroll ready and the other various things.

I upgraded my Ubuntu laptop to Hardy Heron. This turned into a huge pain in the ass. I almost dumped Ubuntu all together. Like I said in my previous post I was frustrated with a few little things that are the joy of Linux and trying to self teach myself these things with no background or training can be maddening. In the end though I’m very pleased with the outcome and very glad I didn’t give up.

I’ve also been trying to help the guys with the IgniteBoise site and event. I did some work on it but @nipper and @rizencreative have been doing almost all the work, esp on the dev side.

I’ve been working with @mlsamuelson to switch my TechBoise site from WordPress to Drupal. Now granted I haven’t had to do much of anything. Poor Michael is doing it all, on the technical side and I’m very grateful for the work hes putting in on it.  I have been trying to time the launch with the next event and the announcement of bringing on 3 new people to run most of the edititorial content. There is still plenty to do on the content side as we are adding a business directory and a job board. I still have to get those started tonight before the conversion so the site can go live with some basic content.

I’ve been working with @nathancook to upgrade my NewCommBiz site and my wife’s JenXMusic site from WP 2.1 to 2.7. The old theme was so old and hacked together in places that it wasn’t a smooth transition. This was my first real blog. Man I made so many mistakes along the way. Stupid things like using catagories like tags. Never upgrading the site. Never upgrading the older plugins. Basically this resulted in me having to scrap all the plugins and starting fresh. The old theme didn’t survive. There were some serious issues that required me to take a free theme and use it for now. Nathan’s going to be designing a new one but for now this new one will have to do.

I’m really hoping that once all these changes are done that I can leave well enough alone for now and not have to fiddle with them for a while. I of course know that this isn’t the case. As of today, all of the sites still need work. This site and HyperBored just need some additional plugins and some content. Mostly sidebar work.  NewCommBiz and TechBoise are still going to need some major work. Then when those are all done I’m sure there will be new things that have to be done.

I hope that as I get more and more proficient at this stuff that it won;t take me several hours to do each thing. Of course, knowing myself the way I do, as I get quicker I’ll probably start more projects.
